Site Icon

Hello,

I am trying to update my site icon through the Users | Site Icon menu item, but the old one remains -- and if I click on "Authors and Users" I do not see the existing one: I have one of those automatically generated ones.

I only looked at this as I noticed a few Wibloggers have funky icons of their own, and wondered how I'd set my own.

Can anyone assist?

Thanks,
Ian.

I had a quick look and it's definitely the Users -> Site Icon bit you need. Are you using a jpeg image? (as that's the only one it says it accepts) Otherwise I don't know, you'll have to wait for someone with a clue :)

Hi Ian. Did you get an error message?

Thanks Jack: and it is a .JPG.

Chris: no error message. I usually use Firefox, but I decided to try IE : on the Site Icon page it has now changed [it scares me IE worked :)], but under "Authors and Users" it is still a computer-generated one.

This is a very low priority: please do not worry about it. Just curious as I noted on other Wiblogs' Comments Jack and Rosamundi [among others] have a non-computer generated icon. Mark this to be done by 2020 -- if you have the time.

Thanks,
Ian.

I just took a look at the Authors and Users bit and it's showing my computer-generated monster (which is fine, I like my purple piratical monster). I wonder if it's something to do with themes, where on some they'll only do the computer-generated monster and on others if you have your own image it will appear. I've noticed when I'm commenting on blogs using my glasgowdailyphoto ID sometimes my own picture appears and sometimes it's the computer generated one, so I'm guessing it's the theme of the blog you're commenting on that determines whether my monster/pattern/chocolate cake appears.

That still doesn't answer the changing the icon question though.

Hello. This may get complicated, so I recommend putting on your thinking trousers.

There are actually 2 different icon systems in the Wibsite. The one you change in your "Site Icon" screen is the one that appears on the homepage of the site and in the Wiblogs list. That's the one that we look after for you.

The other one is run from Gravatar (http://en.gravatar.com/) and is a kind of Internet-wide icon for you. On most Wordpress sites (of which this is one) and many other sites your Gravatar will appear where you leave a comment.

So I'd say sign up with Gravatar (they are nice people, they won't spam you or anything) and add your icon there and not only will it show up in comments around the Wibsite, but will appear magically in many other places around the web as well.

Here endeth the lesson.
