Spam .. and lots of it!

HI guys, just wondering if anyone else is having massive troubles with enormous amounts of huge spam? I didn't check in yesterday at all and today opened up to 125 spam in my comments box! I'm just deleting all but obviously might be missing legitimate comments ... help please?

Hi Miss Lisa

I'm not having masses of spam (100+ or anything), but I do get regular visitors to my spam folder. What I've noticed is that they seem to latch on to just one or two particular posts which attract most of the spam. So I generally go to those particular posts and change the view status from public to private - I'm presuming they do it all automatically so if it's private they will just bounce back to the spammers. Now that I've done that I've got much less spam (just 5 today, that's loads less than before). Of course it's a pain as people can't now read certain posts - I'll probably make them public again at some point and see if the spammers have gone away, but it has helped for now. I'm not sure what else can be done - at least we have a spam bin so they go automatically there rather than being published as legitimate comments, so that's better than nothing I guess. Hope that helps.

You can also disable comments on posts older than "X" days, rather than making posts private.

Yes, rosamundi's advice is excellent - disable comments on posts over a few days old. You can always override this setting for specific posts if you want.

Go to Settings -> Discussion, then on that page there's a tickbox and "Automatically close comments on articles older than [14] days." Change the number in the box to whatever you fancy, tick the tickbox, save, sit back and glory in a job well-done.

Personally I like Spam. Especially in sandwiches with HP sauce, the only true kind. Mmmmmm!!!
